Shogo Hirata (b. 1986 in Kyoto, Japan) is a textile artist who specializes in working with cellulose fibers.
In his artistic practice, he draws inspiration from traditional textile crafts and other analog techniques such as photograms. During the learning process, he seeks to deeply understand the craft and finds ways to apply it in various contexts, using different materials and in combination with other techniques, methods, and cultures.
Using techniques in paper, textiles, and natural dyeing, he creates thought-provoking encounters between aesthetics and functionality, a love of experimentation, and craftsmanship. Shogo Hirata weaves together his extensive knowledge of different cultures, materials, and methods, thereby creating meaningful communities. His artworks have been primarily exhibited in Sweden and Japan, and in recent years, he has also worked on dance installations as a scenographic artist.
Shogo Hirata grew up in Kyoto, Japan, and has been based in Gothenburg since 2014. Recently, he moved his base to a small village in Hälsingland, where he now conducts his artistic work.
